Interfaith Social Services

So I had a meeting yesterday with Laura, the head of a volunteer organization here in Quincy called Interfaith Social Services. It was awesome. I want so badly to get out of working at Lowe's and into working full-time for the Kingdom of God. This wouldn't be a job, but rather a volunteer opportunity. This seems like an awesome organization with arms stretching into almost every aspect of the local Quincy community. They have people literally from every faith in the local area represented within their volunteer base. That can be good or bad. It is important to me to give credit where credit is due. I want people I help in any way to know that I am doing it as a Christian servant for God...not just "because I'm a good or nice guy." It can be a little more complicated and difficult to get that across when there are people from various backgrounds doing the same good things along with me. I know that between me and God, God is still glorified in the end, but I still want those being served to have the fullest opportunity to experience God and come into a relationship with him. That's a tight rope I think I will be walking all my life: On one side you want to "push" the knowledge of God onto someone, and on the other side you must give people appropriate time and space.

I know that some people feel that you don't have to be "working full-time" for God to really be serving God full-time. I agree. However, God has been making it very clear to me for many years that the more traditional "full-time" ministry is in the cards for me at some point. I don't know exactly what for or fashion or time-line I'm talking about, but it is quite possible that this new connection to Interfaith Social Services may offer me some level of opportunity to get involved doing full-time ministry. I don't know if it will be at a church, school, community organization, or something else I haven't thought of yet...who knows what the future holds (God...duh). Not me. The challenge is to live for God and be a faithful, appreciative ambassador for him every step of the way...whether you like the path or not.

Have you considered talking with other full-time church planters (preferrably simple church folks) that you know for discernment? For instance, the full-timers down in New York might have some wise insights for you, based on their own experiences: Jared Looney, Ben Cheek, Malissa Endsley. Also, talk to some who have taken a bi-vocational route, asking them how they see their ministry impact.

I've struggled with this desire myself, always coming back to the reality that the timing is not right yet. (plus, I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't have a day job!)

How do you imagine you would spend a typical day working full-time in the Kingdom of God? (honest question)

I hope something pans out. I want you to be working at what God has given you a talent for. :)

So I've always wondered, is "pan out" a reference to, like, the 1849 California Gold Rush, when people would dip their sieve in the river, shake it around a bit, and there, shining back in the pan, would be a fulfilling job with regular hours?

Don't push the chain.

Sow the seed and let God do the watering, tilling, soil prep, nourishing as well as the miracle of growth. He will do that if we just let him. It has nothing to do with our profession and everything to do with our ability to release to His will. God will tell you when it is time and you probably won't even have to help Him. Great evidence of introspection and analysis in your post. Must be inherited. -- LEP
